The first and the utmost motto of department of chemistry, P. K. College, Contai is to create interest towards chemistry learning and chemistry research among the students. To fulfill the motto, along with regular university curriculum, the department has launched several special activities including performance of several project works, arrangement of student seminar, stimulation of students for summer training programme, arrangement of special lectures, delivered by renounced chemists from reputed institution. Department regularly organizes several conference, seminar on advance research topic of chemistry. The department comprises of well qualified faculty members, well equipped laboratory, well trained laboratory assistant and all the faculty members are strongly committed to teaching, learning and research.  After starting of the Hons course in 1985 the progress of the department is eye catching. The department has produced distinguished alumni who have occupied prestigious positions in industry and academia, in all over India and abroad. In 2019 PG course has been introduced to the department. At present the depart have 7 faculty members and approximately 10 Ph.D. students who are working in a broad area with research interest ranging from traditional to interdisciplinary research like nanotechnology, polymers, biochemical materials  etc. The main source of external funding for research is the sanctioned project for the faculty members from UGC, Science and technology biotechnology Government of west Bengal etc. Besides teaching and research the faculty members always insist the Honours and PG students to organize several additional activities like wall magazine publication, conduction of reunion, celebration of the birthday of several renowned chemists, by which their dormant cultural quality and leading quality will be developed.
