The Department of English of the college is one of the oldest ones having completed fifty years of Honours teaching. The Department has a glorious past and very enthusiastic and enlivening present paving the way for the dazzling days of the future. It bristles with untamed youth that manifests itself in diverse forms. Among the distinguished professors who have served this department over the years, mention may be made of Prof. N. Banerjee, the legendary figure among contemporaries. A vibrant academic and cultural ambience and a very warm and cordial teacher-pupil relationship have always been and hopefully will be the distinguishing mark of the department. The Postgraduate programme of the Department, initiated in 2013, is about to complete its first decade. The department is also part of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Humanities and Social Sciences established in 2019 under the aegis of Vidyasagar University.
