Like any other departments of Prabhat Kumar College, Contai, the department of Mathematics has its glorious past. The department started its journey in 1954. Since inception, the department has produced many scholars who have established themselves in India and abroad. A large number of ex-students of this department are working at various reputed Institutions. The students of this department are generally shining brightly in Vidyasagar University as well as University of Calcutta. Needless to say, our students often become toppers in the university. Good number of students has qualified in the examinations’ like NET, GATE, SET etc. Some ex-students took special training in various fields and are serving the Nation holding responsible position. It May be mentioned here that every year the students of this department observer Teachers’ Day in befitting manner. The syllabus provides the students to learn the subject deeply and it includes the education in Computer Programming.  There are only three permanent teachers in the department which is not sufficient. Also there are SACT teachers who engaged themselves in teaching. Inspite of that the success rate of the students in the examination is very good. The departmental teachers are also engaged in different activities. Sri Arun Kumar Das was the member Executive Council, Finance Committee of Vidyasagar University. A few information about the Department may be made in this connection. Dr. Rohit Kumar Manna, retired associate professor, completed UGC major Research Projects on Oceanology with consummate skill. Mention may be made that Prof. Sudhangshu Sekhar Panda who was the Chairman of West Bengal State Co-operative Bank and also the eminent leader in the field of Co-operative movement also served this department as Head of the Department till retirement. He also acted as the teacher-in-charge of this College 01.06.1977 to 31.05.1978. Prof Asraf Ali who served this department also acted as the teacher-in-charge from 01.12.1998 to 06.01.2000.
