Department of Physics was established with I. S. C.course in 1947. The Honours Course in Physics was introduced in the year 1963. At that time, Prof. Gangesh Chandra Biswas was the Head of the Department of Physics. But Prof. Banabihari Maity, the then Principal and also a teacher of Physics, invited Prof. Haripada Pal to take over the charge of the Honours curriculum. Later, Prof. Pal was adorned to this prestigious post and became the architect of the Honours laboratory. During his tenure of service, a galaxy of brilliant teachers such as Prof. Dinabandhu Roy, Prof. (Dr.) Ramchand Bhunia, Prof. (Dr.) Madhusudan De, Prof. Laxminarayan Sahoo, Dr. Rampada Misra, Prof. Monoranjan Pradhan, Prof. Anil Das, Prof. RadharamanandaDasadhikari, Prof. (Dr.) Sarbeswar Chowdhury, Prof. Subhas Vebly and Prof. Rampada Guchhait rendered their service to the Department and enhanced its glory in the field of education. The Department since its inception was affiliated to the University of Calcutta and in 1987 it got affiliated to the Vidyasagar University. The tireless and sincere effort of the teaching and non-teaching staff for introducing the Postgraduate studies in Physics results in the long-cherished commencement of this course in 2006 under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University.
