The Dept. of Bengali of the college was established with BA course in 1940 Under the University of Calcutta. But the journey of this Department already started in 1926 with the inception of the Intermediate Course. The Honours course in Bengali was introduced in 1958. Since 1985, the college has been running under the affiliation of Vidyasagar University. The tireless effort of the teaching and non-teaching staff for introducing the Postgraduate studies in Bengali resulted in the long cherished commencement of this course in 2013. Needless to say, this Department is one of the enriched departments of the College. Previously the Department was enlightened by some illustrious teachers like Gunamay Manna (Eminent Novelist), Dr. Rameswar Shaw (Famous Linguist), Dr. Nilratan sen (Literary Critic). Graduated from this Department students like Chittaranjan Maity (Novelist), Pashupati Sasmal (Literary Critic) showed their expertise in the field of Bengali Literature. We really feel proud that great Tagore-Researchers Dr. Kalidas Nag (1944), Prabodh Kumar Sanyal, (1945), Acharya Kshitimohan Sen (1946) have visited our college to deliver lectures on the auspicious day of Rabindra Janma-Jayanti. However, the first Tagore’s Remembrance Ceremony observed in this college was 7th May 1943 (22she Shraban), the 2nd death Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Our Department still carries on the tradition. An active Alumni Association with 200 members organizes Gunamay Manna endowment lectures and reunion every year to cherish their memories of student life.
We have a Departmental Library having more than 850 books. Wall magazines are regularly published by this Department. Every year, Field Studies and Excursions are organized. The teachers of this department are engaged in various college and social works.
