We cordially invite you to join the National Webinar on “Questioning the Politics of Identity: Disability Perspective” to be organized by Department of Teachers' Training (B.Ed.) and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Prabhat Kumar College, Contai, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal- 721404, India.

Event Timing: July 9, 2020 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM (IST)

About the Webinar :

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 15% of any population does have some form of disabilities. A recent estimate revealed that 85-90% of the global population of persons with disabilities (PwDs) resides in so-called developing countries. In India, there are no clear estimates or projections on the number of PwDs. The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) argued that 5 to 6% of Indian population has some form of disabilities. However, the Census 2011, which has covered only 8 types of disabilities, revealed that 2.21% (26,810,557) of total population in India are certified PwDs. Extensive literature showed that PwDs are one of the most disenfranchised and marginalized groups in the country and they are often excluded, sidelined, unheeded and unheard in every sphere of their lives including education, employment, politics. They are even denied their basic rights and as ‘Invisible’ they are often side-lined from the mainstream debate and discourse of equality, equity and dignity. Their voice is subverted and dented. Their participation, representation and contribution in nation building are often relegated, ignored and not conceded by the State. The PwDs who constitute a huge chunk of Country’s total population are still battling for their recognition and identity in spite of several initiatives taken by the Government in the form of policies, legislations and affirmative actions. Nevertheless, leaving on margins such a large group of PwDs no Country can step into the frontier of a socially, economically and democratically developed and inclusive nation. Therefore, questioning the politics of identity, recognition of PwDs and proposing the ways out to ensure the fundamental rights of PwDs like other counterparts is very imperative to create an inclusive, enabling and defensible society.
