Background

India is among the world’s most disaster-prone countries with 27 of its 29 states and seven union territories exposed to recurrent natural hazards such as cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, floods and droughts.More severe and frequent climate-related shocks, changing seasons and gradual changes increase the overall risk of hunger and undernutrition through various causal pathways that relate to livelihoods; food security; maternal and child care and feeding practices; and water, sanitation and health.  In five major natural disasters from 2000-2016 some 17,671 children lost their lives. The 2015-2016 drought in ten states affected an estimated 330 million people, including 37 million children under age five. Many aspects of children’s lives are affected adversely including, but not limited to dropping out of school due to schools being used for other purposes such as shelters during natural disasters, missing immunization due to disruption of health services and the non-availability of nutritious food, clean water and sanitation facilities leading to malnourishment and diseases.  Both sudden on-set disasters and chronic long-term disasters have potential impacts on food security, disease and the nutritional status of vulnerable populations. Recently, the rapid increase in the number of pandemic  cases, as well as the measures adopted to contain its spread have put many families at risk by impacting their food supply, livelihoods and household incomes and their ability to access critical services for health and nutrition, early childhood care, education and social protection globally and in India. COVID-19 is a complex crisis that affects all aspects of life, both immediate and long-term.The prevalence of malnutrition in India has notably declined over the last decade, and the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey 2016-18 revealed that major challenges remain. There are still around 20 million children under five years of age who are suffering from wasting, over 40 million children are chronically malnourished , and more than half of Indian women aged 15-49 years are anemic. The secondary impacts of the COVID-19 crisis are aggravating the challenges faced by many families, especially in terms of access to affordable and nutritious food. This could reverse some of the recent gains in reducing malnutrition. Efforts to promote and protect the nutritional status of children and mothers in emergency prone countries are critical to ensure better resilience and faster recovery. According to International commitment, health is a key element of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, adopted by member state. Hence, the Sendai Framework also places strong emphasis on resilient health systems by the integration of disaster risk management into health care provision at all levels, and by the development of the capacity of health workers in understanding disaster risk and applying and implementing disaster risk approaches in health work for resilience. The webinar is helpful for different stakeholders for understanding the need of nutritious food security for the children for building resilience
